You can use drills to help you increase. Some of the drills you can use are the word recognition tests. We can perform a drill now to help you recognize words with ease. Drill: When Stress Works Stress is energy that either puts us in fear, or helps us to channel our energy more constructively. We can use stress to adapt to changes that occur in our life, or we can allow stress to rule our emotions and cause us health problems. If you use stress constructively, you can do things you never thought possible. Test: True or False What is stress? When does stress help us to achieve? Where does stress come from? Stress is never good. The sentence and test is designed to build your speed of reading, comprehension level, and to help you adapt to new words. Of course, you are likely familiar with the subject, which is good, since it makes easier reading. Each time you practice drills for better understanding, you can move toward reading fast. We can also present a word puzzle to help you learn new words, which can help you to relate better to materials you read. Word Puzzle: Bradawl = Drill Puncture = drill Exercise = drill Discipline = drill Notice each word listed means the same in some way. Word puzzle: Pressure = stress Emphasis = stress Accent = stress Highlight = stress Again, notice the words mean the same in some way. Once you learn to define words it can help you boost your reading, comprehend information better, and read through text faster. Another strategy speed-readers use is the process of eliminating empty words, or phrases that are too wordy. We can review samples to help you appreciate how this can increase your speed of reading. The words italicized are what we can revise. Sample: Wordy Revised: It was out of opinion that she decided to: She believed: In this day and age: today In the event that: if For the reason that: because Notice, how simply put the words can conform to a reader. In other words, a speed reader would restate visually in his or her mind, it was out of the opinion that she decided to: revised: She believed: Readers are familiar with proper grammar and English most times, since through practice they build on vocabulary. Sometimes speed readers will read information out of order. In other words, the reader may read the second, third, or fourth paragraph to make sense of the content. The process helps them to look closer at what the reader is saying to them, which increases their comprehension level. Readers will also use markers, or cards to read information. In other words, the reader will place an object over the sentence to read and slowly glide the object down the page while reading. This also helps to increase rate of speed. Overall, some of the best tools you can build on are within you, which can help you increase speed. Most readers will analyze, select, preview, review, question, and set their minds to read fast before they start reading. To start speed reading make sure you find a comfortable area, set the light to work best with your eyes without straining, and only read material that presents easy to read text.
