Reading in How to Increase Speed When learning to speed-read you can read the heading (title), the subheadings, charts, lists, graphics and summarized paragraphs to grasp meaning. To help you see how this works we can consider a few sentences.
Example: The Emotional Confusion (Title - Heading) Subheading: The shame behind guilt
Many people confuse emotions, such as guilt and shame.
The fact is shame is an inner acknowledgement, which causes embarrassment, which humiliates a person. Guilt is sharing or taking blame or fault for an action, or word spoken. Guilt is a mark of our behaviors. In other words, our behaviors could cause us guilt.
Shame is a flawlessness we spot within our self. Shame is deep rooted. Shame often comes from a violation of standards, laws, principles, and so on. We often show shame by diverting our feelings. We may act angry, contemptuous, harbor resentment, blame others, act out in rage, and attack others, and so on while expressing shame.
Now, we can read the title The Emotional Confusion and see that we are preparing to read information, which relates to emotions.
The subtitle or heading tells us that shame may be behind guilt, yet we must read the first sentence to see if this is true. The first sentence tells us that confusion revolves around emotional responses, such as shame and guilt.
Comprehension: We know that confusion is apparent in theories behind emotional responses, such as shame and guilt. Yet, do we understand how guilt differs from shame? No, not at this point:
Reading the second paragraph helps us to appreciate that shame comes from within and causes bubbling emotions, such as humiliation and embarrassment. Reading to the next sentence briefly can help us to see that guilt comes from our actions.
Now, we can continue to read the sentence, but already we see that shame and guilt differs, which guilt comes from actions and shame comes from within.
Next, you can move to brief the remaining paragraphs to see if you can pick through words to read an entire sentence. This is the process of speed-reading. Rather the method is one of the ways we can learn to speed read.

Comprehensive Test: Multiple Personality Disorders-MPD was recently, renamed by the Psychiatric Association Board. The new name for MPD is now Disassociate Identity Disorder-DID. While few may argue that the name should have remained as MPD, the majority voted and the name was changed accordingly. MPD is a neurological disorder, whereas a brilliant mind had abilities to create defense mechanisms to protect them against trauma and harm. These brilliant minds creatively changes clothes so to speak, which the-alter on the spot has very different views, ideas, thoughts, behaviors, friends, and more than the-alter on the spot before him or her. The person is able to create both male and female alters, old and young, as well as multi-colored personalities.
I chose this topic, simply because the topic is both complex and controversial. While the truth is, people do suffer MPD, many wish to find excuses to accept the reality, simply because they rather avoid trying to understand something so complex that it baffles the mind.
Now, read the sentence and tell me what you comprehend? Read as fast as you can without stopping to figure out words you cannot define now.
Comprehensive Results: We see that the Psychiatric Association has renamed MPD. We see that arguments come from the change. We see that MPD is a neurological issue, and not necessary a mental illness. We see MPD patients are brilliant people. We see their disorder comes from severe trauma. Now, you are probably trying to baffle your mind to understand in depth what the meaning is, but if you read with a relaxed mind without worrying about the definitions of the words, you will read fast, as well you will comprehend more than you think.
